INSTALLATION MANUAL

Creating a safe, slip-free pathway during winter is essential for protecting your family and guests. Slip and fall accidents are one of the leading causes of injury in cold weather, and heavy snow only makes conditions worse.

HotStep Snow Melting Heated Mats provide a reliable solution by automatically melting snow and ice the moment accumulation begins. These snow melting mats deliver continuous, consistent heat, eliminating the need for shoveling or relying on temporary fixes like ice melt or salt.

Built for harsh U.S. winters, HotStep mats function as snow melt mats, heated outdoor mats, heated walkway mats, heated sidewalk mats, and heated stair mats, depending on the layout you choose. Their heavy-duty, UV-protected rubber construction makes them strong enough for everyday foot traffic—and durable enough that certain models can be driven over, making them ideal as snow melting mats for driveway use as well.

Customize your ideal snow melt mat system with HotStep. Each snow melting mat requires at least one GFCI power unit (sold separately) for proper operation.

Please note: these snow and ice melting mats are only compatible with the HotStep GFCI power unit and cannot be connected to older K-Series snow melting mats due to different electrical configurations.

⚠️ Important:

  • Avoid parking vehicles for extended periods on the mats. Prolonged tire heat may cause surface damage.

  • HotStep and K-Series snow melt mats are not compatible due to different connectors and power configurations. Always use mats from the same series together for safe performance.

Stay safe this winter with HotStep Snow Melting Heated Mats—a powerful, low-maintenance alternative to constant shoveling, ice melt, and salt. Whether you're protecting your home or business, these heated mats for snow offer a dependable way to prevent snow and ice buildup all season long.

A Modern Alternative for Snow & Ice Removal
HotStep snow melting mats provide a reliable alternative for keeping walkways, driveways, and stairs clear of snow and ice.

They serve as a convenient alternative to solutions like ice melt salt and HeatTrak mats, offering a durable solution for residential and commercial use.

Perfect for homeowners or businesses seeking snow and ice melting mats, HotStep mats deliver dependable performance for heated outdoor mats, heated walkway mats, and heated driveway mats, making winter snow and ice removal safe and hassle-free.

ASSEMBLY OF HEATING MATS
Before installing the heating mats, clear away any loose snow or ice from the area where the mats will be placed. You may also position the mats directly on snow and ice if necessary.

Warning: Do not walk on the mats until they have melted down to solid ground. Ensure the surface is free from sharp objects such as stones, nails, or glass, which may damage the mats.

These HotStep mats function as snow melting mats, snow melt mats, heated outdoor mats, heated walkway mats, heated sidewalk mats, and heated stair mats, depending on placement. Certain models can also serve as snow melting mats for driveway or driveway snow melting mats when properly installed on vehicle paths.

Interconnecting Heating Mats
All models come with waterproof connector plugs so multiple mats can be serially connected. This allows you to build a customized system of heat mats, snow melting pads, or heat mats for snow across walkways, stairs, or driveways.

Firmly snap the male and female connectors together to ensure a secure, weatherproof connection.

Connecting the Power Supply
The power cable may be attached to either the first or last mat in the system.
Before connecting the power supply, always confirm that all the mats are thoroughly connected together first.

These snow and ice melting mats should be connected to a grounded electrical outlet using a HotStep GFCI power unit.

Note: HotStep mats are not compatible with older K-Series connectors, HeatTrak-style connectors, or other brands such as heat track mats or heat track snow melting mats.

Fastening the Mats
Each mat is designed with mounting eyes (holes) in each corner. This makes it possible to fasten your snow melt mats or heated mats for snow to prevent shifting during operation.

Recommended fastening methods:

  • Stainless or galvanized screws uitable for the surface.

  • Heavy-duty double-sided tape can be used as alternative way of fastening the mats.

  • Jointing plates for surfaces with an incline over 20 degrees (prevents sliding)

These installation methods help ensure stability across walkways, steps, and even heated driveway applications using driveway heating mats or a driveway heat mat setup.

HotStep Snow Melting Heated Mats requires a GFCI Power Unit (sold separately). The GFCI Power Unit turns off the power if any of the electric current begins leaking to the ground. It is important to test the GFCI Power Unit each time the mat is installed and before use.

To power on and off a mat you require a GFCI unit which connects your mat to a 120V electrical outlet only. You can connect up to 13 Amps as a safe setting on a single GFCI. If your connected mats exceed 13 Amps you will have to split up the mats and add a second GFCI to plug in a separate outlet.

Here is all you need to do:

1. Locate the test and reset buttons on the Power Unit.
2. Plug the power cord into the outlet.
3. Alternately press the RESET and TEST buttons.
4. Each time you press the RESET button, the power light should turn on. If the light does not come on, make sure there is voltage at the outlet.
5. Each time you press the TEST button, the power light should turn off.
6. Leave the Power Unit with the light turned on. If the Power Unit does not operate as described above,do not use the mat. Call customer service at (800) 624-0041.

Power your HotStep snow melting mats whenever there is a threat of snow or ice. These snow melt mats work best when turned on before accumulation begins, ensuring safer walkways, stairs, and driveways. When there is no snow or ice in the forecast, it’s a good idea to unplug the mats to conserve energy.

Before storing, clean each mat using mild soap and water. Allow it to dry completely, then place it back into its original packaging. Store the mats indoors after winter. It is important to store the mats immediately after the winter ends.

Proper storage prevents unnecessary exposure to summer heat and UV rays, which can shorten the lifespan of heated outdoor mats and heated walkway mats.

HotStep snow melting heated mats are safe for many residential and commercial surfaces. Here’s where you can confidently install your heated sidewalk mats, heated stair mats, snow melting mats for driveway, and other configurations:

  • Concrete: Concrete driveways, sidewalks, and entryways work extremely well with snow and ice melting mats. The surface handles heat effectively and offers long-term durability.

  • Asphalt: Asphalt is another excellent surface for snow melting mats or driveway heating mats, as it tolerates warmth and winter conditions without issue.

  • Pavers: These snow melting mats can be safely placed under pavers if they are properly installed and provide good drainage.

  • Stone or Tile: These materials are often used for patios or walkways, and these snow-melting mats can be installed beneath them with proper precautions.

  • Wooden Decks: Some of these snow-melting mats are compatible with wooden surfaces, but it's important to check the product details to avoid potential warping from heat.

  • Synthetic Surfaces (Composite Decking): These snow melting mats can be used on synthetic decking.

  • Turf or Artificial Grass: These snow melting mats are okay to use on turf or artificial grass.

1. Is it safe to drive over the HotStep Snow Melting Heated Mats?
Yes, HotStep snow melting mats are built to handle normal vehicular traffic in typical winter conditions. However, always ensure the ground beneath the mats is clear of sharp objects that could puncture them. For setups involving frequent heavy trucks or unique conditions, contact our technical support team at (800) 624-0041 for guidance. Certain models can also function as driveway heating mats, driveway heat mat, or driveway snow melting mats.

2. Why don’t the snow melt mats feel warm when I touch them?
Snow melt mats are designed to melt snow and ice efficiently, not to feel hot to the touch. In very cold weather, the mats may feel cooler than your hand, even while operating. To confirm they’re working, check the indicator light on the plug. If snow isn’t melting after the first snowfall, contact our troubleshooting team. These heated mats for snow provide continuous winter protection even when they don’t feel warm. (800) 624-0041.

3. Are the power units waterproof?
The GFCI power unit is certified as rainproof but not fully submersible. Avoid placing it in areas where water collects, such as ditches or puddles. For best performance, hang the power unit vertically at least 18" from the ground. If placing on a surface, protect it with a loosely wrapped plastic bag to minimize water exposure while allowing moisture to escape. The mats themselves are waterproof, making them reliable snow and ice melting mats or heated outdoor mats , but the power unit requires care.

4. Can I leave the snow melting mats on all the time?
Yes, you can run snow melting mats continuously throughout winter without causing damage. However, this may increase electricity costs. For efficiency, we recommend turning them on during snowfalls or using a thermostat accessory to automate operation. This ensures your heated walkway mats, heated sidewalk mats, or heated stair mats activate even at night or when no one is home—saving time and energy.

5. Can I place the snow melt mat on any surface?
Snow melt mats and snow and ice melting mats can be placed on most surfaces. However, surfaces with special coatings or sealers (e.g., stamped concrete) may be affected by prolonged heat (may cause damage). To protect your surface while ensuring effective snow melting, place a thin heat barrier such as plywood, outdoor carpet, turf, or insulation under the mats to protect your surface while ensuring effective snow melting.

6. Are the snow melting mats safe for parking vehicles?
HotStep snow melting mats for driveway and heated driveway setups are durable enough to drive over and support cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, we do not recommend parking vehicles for extended periods on the mats, as continuous contact with heated mats may overheat tires and cause potential damage.

We put it right outside our back door and it really works! Definitely melts any snow or ice that goes directly on the mat (but not around it).
